Job Description

 Babysitter

Ever tried babysitting? It’s like a rollercoaster filled with laughter, challenges, and a sprinkle of chaos here and there. Every child is different and every child comes with their own set of unique qualities and idiosyncrasies. So, buckle up, while I take you on a thrilling ride of a babysitter’s escapade.

Before embarking on my babysitting adventures, I naively believed that this would be an easy stroll in the park. Babysitting is in fact no easy feat; it requires a blend of patience, creativity, and versatility. My first babysitting job involved caring for a sweet 4-year-old girl who was lively and playful, but not quite the easiest cookie.

I took on many roles that allowed me to become the best babysitter I could be. The three most important roles included:

  • Logistics Coordinator

  • Nutritionist

  • Entertainment Specialist

Below I will (try to) describe my duties and responsibilities of a typical babysitting day in my life.

Logistics Coordinator

As a Logistics Coordinator, I ensure that everything is running smoothly and swiftly:

  • Organize pick-ups and drop-offs at school

  • Arrange playdates with friends

  • Ensure safety in public and at home

My day starts off by picking up my 4-year old girl from her house, already dressed and ready for school. It takes 10 minutes to walk from her apartment to her elementary school, and I always plan to arrive 15 minutes before her scheduled school start time at 8:30am. As we are walking, I make sure she is holding my hand and looking both ways as we are crossing the streets. After her school ends, I arrive promptly at 3:15 to pick her up, with a go-go squeeze and goldfish in hand. We then arrange plans with her friends to go to the park or come over to have a playdate. We schedule 2 hours for playdates before I cook a nutritious meal and prepare for bedtime.

Nutritionist

As a nutritionist, a babysitter ensures the child is eating proper snacks and meals.

  • Plan and prepare nutritious dinners

  • Accommodate dietary restrictions, nut allergy

  • Purchase healthy snacks as an alternative to sugary sweets

As a Babysitter I take on the role of a Nutritionist and make sure my 4-year old is eating healthily. Once a week I will go to the grocery store and pick up healthy snacks like yogurt, apple sauce, veggie sticks, and fruits and vegetables. I make sure to abide by her dietary restrictions and keep her away from any nuts. For dinner, I curate a well-balanced meal that consists of a protein, either chicken or fish, and vegetables, like green beans, broccoli, or carrots.

Entertainment Specialist

Lastly, as a Babysitter I take on the role of an Entertainment Specialist and ensure my child is engaged and having a good time.

  • Organize enriching hands-on arts and craft activities

  • Plan a variety of games that foster cognitive development

  • Limiting screen time and encouraging reading

As an Entertainment Specialist, I tried my best to cultivate a sense of joy and engagement through different games and activities catered to my child’s interests. 4-year olds love using their imagination, so I made sure to create a dynamic atmosphere to let her imagination flourish. We spent many afternoons creating slime from scratch, building tents with blankets and pillows, and engaging in storytelling through interactive children's books.

  1. Hi Sophia! I love the way you broke down your work as a babysitter overall. Your descriptions of a typical day as a logistics coordinator with the different timestamps was especially helpful in understanding your work as someone who has no babysitting experience. Out of curiosity, what led you to babysitting this 4-year old? Were you and her family neighbors? Or were you running a babysitting business at the time?

  8. Hi Sophia, working with children is probably one of the hardest task ever. I cannot imagine myself being a babysitter at all. I think the job requires a lot of patience, energy, and genuine enthusiasm to spend time with kids. But perhaps hanging out with kids can bring out the inner child in people as well!
